What will happen?

In most cases, a first visit will likely involve a relaxed korero from us both, and so will require more time. Please allow an hour and a half. I like to take the time it takes to get to know you, hear why you came and learn how I can best help you. Treatment can also be more accurately prescribed when the time and care needed is taken to gain a fuller understanding of what has lead you to this point. You are welcome to bring someone if that makes you feel more comfortable.

So what to expect… Acupuncture treatment generally involves lying down so you are comfortable and warm. I tend to walk you through what and why I am doing when I give Acupuncture… which is the insertion of fine, single use, sterilised needles into chosen Acupuncture points. If you have any concerns, questions or fears we just work with what makes you feel cared for. The needles stay in for about 20 minutes and I generally restimulate them part way through. You may feel a sensation ranging from a pressure to a spreading around the needle.

At this stage I will confess… I am not a fan of needles… however, this makes me a very gentle Acupuncturist. Do they hurt? Not generally, the actual experience is interesting more than scary. I remember a 15 year old boy on his first visit for a rugby injury bursting out laughing when the needle went in, in pure relief.

After I take the needles out, which you probably wont even feel, I tend to give some massage to finish up with some hands on… usually foot massage. Most people find the treatment deeply relaxing and look forward to their next visit.

The course of treatment

Frequency of treatment depends on how acute the condition is. In the case of intense and recent pain, daily treatment may be required. In urgent cases home visits can be arranged. But generally treament starts off as a weekly visit, and depending on what is being treated, may spread out to fortnightly or monthly. I will be able to give more of an idea when 1. We have gone through the intake process and 2. We see how you respond to the treatment.

When gauging results, I think of 3 strikes and your out. If there is no valuable change after 3 treatments, I will try and make suggestions of other modalities and or practitioners to see for your particular issue and wish you well.
